VGF trains young people, usually aged around 14, to volunteer for this project, which we are happy to present to schools that are interested. The bus and tram attendants are there to help other schoolchildren on buses and trams and intervene if there are any little disagreements. The young people also learn to keep an eye open, bear responsibility and to work in a team. The whole point is personal responsibility and self-protection – and the project promotes moral courage in young people.
The youngsters are given about 20 hours’ training on defending themselves: physical disagreements have to be avoided, they must not allow themselves to be provoked, and have to turn to the public if conflicts escalate. At the end of their training we invite them in for a special day on which they are given their identity cards and certificates. About four weeks later there is a feedback day with their teachers, the police and VGF trainers.
We can of course also carry out the project with other transport companies.
