Fire protection

Fire extinguishers in vehicles and stations

All subways, busses, and trams and all station platforms are equipped with fire extinguishers, which can be used by anyone in case of fire. Their locations are marked by a fire extinguisher symbol. Each extinguisher includes instructions for fighting fire.

Fire protection in underground stations

Heavily frequented stations of VGF, such as Hauptwache and Konstablerwache, are equipped with an alarm system for evacuation in public areas. The public areas of the B-level and the traffic levels are equipped with a smoke extraction system to ensure the fastest possible smoke detection.

“No access” signs are located at station entrances, which can be switched on in case of emergency – this prevents additional persons from entering the danger zone.

In order to improve orientation in case of heavy smoke, flashing lights are mounted on the ceilings of the staircases. Smoke barriers and smoke doors prevent rapid spreading of smoke. Stations that are not so equipped will be upgraded as quickly as possible.

In case of emergency, escalators that are going down are stopped. The lifts initiate evacuation mode. The lifts then stop at the next safe level (usually the street level) and can no longer be used.

We thoroughly inspect all of our stations regularly with the Frankfurt fire department and the technical supervision department, in order to find defects and eliminate these as quickly as possible. In addition, our drivers and the employees of the security service are constantly on the lookout for possible fire dangers.

Together with the fire department, the employees of the BLST received thorough instruction in fire protection. The employees of the security service and the railway drivers received intensive instruction regarding behaviour in case of fire. Because: fire protection affects all employees!
