The R-unit was the first 100-per cent low-floor tram in the VGF fleet. This type is driven by motors in the wheel hubs, which does away with the need for axles between them, makes them easy to board and provides a roomy passenger compartment. Each motorised unit has an electrically powered extending ramp for wheelchair users at the second door. These vehicles are currently in service on routes 11, 14, 16 and 17.
