New and modernised underground trains

New and modernised underground trains

From May 2008, we began taking receipt of a total of 146 of the new U5 Frankfurt underground rail vehicles, also built by Bombardier, for an unsubsidised cost of €300 million. This is planned to continue until 2015. From November 2011 onwards we expect to be using the new short-coupled U5-50 subtype, vehicles which can be boarded along their entire 50-metre length.

To enable the new U5s to be coupled with the older generation U4s from Siemens, in August 2010 VGF began the complete upgrading of the U4s, which came into service in 1994 and 1995, adapting their interior to that of the U5. By 2013, our central workshop will have fully renovated 37 of these vehicles, and at the same time subjecting them to a much-needed thorough overhaul, at a cost per vehicle of €632,000. Total cost €23,380,000.
