New signal box for U6 and U7

The C-Line received a new signal box on 20 May 2016. VGF invested €8.5 million in the modernisation of the signal box technology at the Zoo station for this. In the run up to this, cables and computers were installed. The “rehanging” of the old technology on top of the new technology was carried out in full during a two-week operational interruption of the U6 and U7 lines.
The maintenance of local transport infrastructure is at least as important as its renovation. Frankfurt’s first U-Bahn line (the A-Line) opened in October 1968, while the third main route (the C-Line), which carries the U6 and U7 lines, opened in October 1986. The signal box technology, which ensures safe operation, turns 30 years old in 2016. It used to work but it’s becoming more susceptible to faults and replacement parts are slowly running out. The threat of longer-running operational interruptions would have persisted.
In the wake of its commissioning on 20 May, passengers can see little difference at first glance, but with new signal box technology, the U6 and U7 lines will be less liable to suffer faults, making the works worth the trouble.
